The Goa Chief Minister, Pramod Sawant, has revealed in the House that the casinos in both the North and South of Goa have contributed a cumulative sum of INR 1,277.29 Crores to the State exchequer in the last nine years!
The Chief Minister recently revealed the draft rule that locals will not be allowed inside casinos from February 1. This decision was fielded by the opposition and several other local organizations and this led to MLA Luizinho Faleiro asking Sawant about the revenue generated from the industry.
Casinos Contribution To The Government
The CM revealed that the offshore casinos generated INR 785,52,97,280 to State revenue while contribution of onshore casinos was INR 491,76,56,198 till January 20, 2021 which combined to the tune of INR 1277,29,53,478 in the last nine years.
River Mandovi has been the offshore site for Goa casinos for the longest time now. However, the move from the sea to land allocated to MOPA Greenfield International Airport has been under consideration for quite some time now as well.
MLA Atanasio Monseratte also had a few questions about the relocation of the casinos to which Pramod Sawant replied, that the Captain of Ports are exploring the possibilities of relocating all the four offshore Casinos & one passenger vessel from river Mandovi to another sheltered locality/rivers within the jurisdiction of the Inland Waterways of Goa.
Inspections of various sites have already been undertaken by the COP and several sites within the Inland Waterways have been verified for relocating the offshore Casino/Passenger vessels. River Mandovi, River Zuari and River Chapora are the recommended sites for the relocation.
