December 18, 2020
The AHL and ECHL announced on Thursday that they are joining Hockey Is For Everyone, the NHL’s social campaign (in conjunction with the NHLPA) aimed at promoting diversity and inclusion in the sport. The expansion means that the campaign will reach fans in 51 new markets across North America.
Casting a wide net to be inclusive of everyone regardless of their race, color, religion, national origin, gender identity, age, sexual orientation, socio-economic status or disabilities, the campaign will message fans on game nights, via social media, and in local communities through grassroots initiatives. Both the AHL and ECHL already participate in hockey’s Declaration of Principles, a set of social values that set expectations for all levels of the sport.
“We continually look to make the sport of hockey more diverse, inclusive and welcoming for all,” Kim Davis, the NHL’s senior executive VP of social impact, growth initiatives and legislative affairs, said in a statement. “We will we use the NHL’s influence to push forward vital social change that is needed in today’s society and ensure that hockey is for everyone.”
