Fantasy Premier League Captain Picks – Gameweek 9

Our Fantasy Premier League captain picks return after yet another international break, this time in the heart of a second lockdown. And what a coincidence, plenty of players are contracting Covid-19 whilst away on their international duties and consequently are at home self-isolating for the next few weeks. Anyway, the show must go on, so let’s attempt to hunt down some big point scorers in in our Fantasy Premier League tips for the Gameweek 9.

Fantasy Premier League Captain Picks – Week 9

Hakim Ziyech (vs Newcastle)

Over the summer, Frank Lampard brought in two creative attacking midfielders, Kai Havertz and Hakim Ziyech, and so far they have had polar opposite effects at Stamford Bridge. One looks a few more poor performances away from being labelled a ‘flop’, whereas the other is being tipped for an incredible season and to fire his club up the Premier League table, and it is the latter playmaker, Ziyech, who we will be focusing on.

The Moroccan midfielder was sidelined with an injury for the opening stages of the season but, since returning to full fitness, has looked the missing piece of the puzzle for the Blues. The former Ajax star has already registered four assists and two goals in seven appearances in all competitions, as well as being a key man in the heart of the build-up for other goals.

Up against a very inconsistent Newcastle side, Chelsea will head into the match as favourites and full of confidence, especially considering they haven’t lost in all competitions since the 20th September. The versatility of Ziyech makes him a threat to the entire defensive line as the forward drifts into pockets in the midfield and the attack, if he isn’t being man marked for 90 minutes then he may be a fruitful Fantasy Premier League Captain Pick.

Bruno Fernandes (vs West Brom)

Bruno Fernandes silenced the ‘Pen-andes’ dubbers in Gameweek 8 with two goals from open-play, a powerful header just a few minutes before a cross-cum-shot curled past Jordan Pickford and into the back of the net. The Portuguese maestro has made Manchester United tick since arriving from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020 for £67.6million, adding a new dimension to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s attack.

And with a match up against West Brom on the horizon, Fernandes will be looking to keep up his record of more goal contributions than games played so far this campaign, five goals and three assists in seven games. The Baggies are currently sat in 17th position in the Premier League, just two points above rock-bottom Sheffield United. Slaven Bilic’s side are still without a win this season and it looks incredibly unlikely that that is going to change anytime soon.

West Brom have the joint-worst average of goals conceded per game, 2.1 goals, and just one clean sheet to their name, so United really should be winning this game by three or four. Therefore, with Fernandes in such good form, it would be naïve not to include him amongst this weeks Fantasy Premier League Captain Picks.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (vs Fulham)

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been a revelation this season, making the striker spot his own and repaying the loyalties of manager Carlo Ancelotti. The Italian boss made a bold move in allowing both Moise Keane and Theo Walcott to leave the Toffees on loan in the summer, putting all his faith in lone striker DCL, who hasn’t disappointed.

The 23-year-old has scored eight goals in eight appearances this season, catching the eye of England boss Gareth Southgate, who consequently called him up. The striker has since bagged twice in four appearances for the Three Lions, including an inch-perfect penalty last week against Ireland that whistled into the top corner.

With Fulham in the dreadful form that they are, it would be disappointing not to see DCL continue this unbelievable form at Craven Cottage on Sunday. The Cottagers have just one win and one draw to their name this season, although they would have had two draws had it not been for a ludicrous Panenka attempt by Ademola Lookman last gameweek against West Ham at 1-0 down in the last minute. With Scott Parker’s side leaking goals and looking relegation certainties, Everton really should be winning this fixture in commanding fashion if they are to be considered Champions League placing contenders this season.

Wilfried Zaha (vs Burnley)

When Crystal Palace have a winnable fixture, there’s only one man that can feature in Fantasy Premier League Captain Picks: Wilfried Zaha. The Ivorian attacker is the heartbeat of the Palace attack and is beginning to form some lethal partnerships with some of his teammates, notably summer-signing Eberechi Eze and strike partner Jordan Ayew.

The tricky frontman can play on either wing and through the middle, either as a striker or as a number 10, which makes him incredibly difficult to mark as he drifts from position to position. His five goals and two assists this season already matches his total of seven goal contributions in the 2019/2020 campaign, so a fixture against out-of-form Burnley appears to be the perfect opportunity to better that record.

Sean Dyche’s men simply no longer look the unit that they once were. The lack of recruitment matched with repetitive and one-dimensional tactics make the Clarets easy to break down and incredibly beatable. The only department where Burnley look sound anymore is their defence, but will they be able to cope with the constant waves of pressure from the deadly Palace attack? Probably not, which is why Zaha is a definite Fantasy Premier League Captain Pick.
