Masters Tournament 2020: Best Sleeper and Longshot Bets

All the world’s best golfers meet this week for a November Masters as Augusta National. It will be a different looking Masters, but the weather forecast is looking similar to what we often see in April – temperatures sitting in the 70s and potential rain.

While many might assume the man wearing the Green Jacket at the end of the week is typically one of the top-ranked players in the world, it hasn’t been that way as of late. In fact, since 2011, only Jordan Spieth and Adam Scott came into the tournament in the top 10 of the Official World Golf Rankings and won. Augusta has opened itself to many different types of players and some surprise winners.

With so many top ranked players coming in with good form and intriguing storylines, there are a handful on intriguing plays on players that may be coming in under the radar. We’ll take a look at five sleeper bets ranging at 66/1 and higher to take a look at for the Masters. Key stats this week that we think will play important are Driving Distance, GIRs Gained, SG: Around the Green, SG: Par 5 and SG: Par 4: 450-500 Yards. All bets are recommended as either outright bets or placement bets (Top 10s, Top 20s).

Best Sleeper Bets

Adam Scott (+6600)

The 2013 champion is perhaps being overlooked because of some inconsistent form and not many appearances since the restart. Before that, he was playing wonderful golf and perhaps would’ve been one of the favorites in an April Masters after winning at Riviera and the Australian Open. Scott gained four strokes on approach – his most since the Riviera win – last week in a solid outing in Houston and should come in confident. His Masters history includes four Top 10s, including one win and one runner-up.

Scottie Scheffler (+8000)

The reigning PGA Tour Rookie of the Year has been a bit inconsistent since he missed the U.S. Open because of a positive COVID-19 test, but he’s begun to bring it together a bit in his last two starts. Before that, Scheffler was probably playing the second best golf in the world behind Dustin Johnson. He was in the final pairing in the PGA Championship and showed the big stage doesn’t frighten him. He’s also one of the most consistent drivers of the golf ball on Tour and ranks 13th in GIRs Gained.

Sungjae Im (+10000)

Another recent Rookie of the Year is coming into Augusta for his first Masters a bit overlooked. The reasoning makes sense – his play since the restart has been very inconsistent after he was playing some incredible golf earlier this year. But Im seems to have figured his irons out by gaining on approach in six of his last seven tournaments. And his driver has remained consistent with plenty of distance. He ranks 9th in SG: Par 5 and showed us with his win at PGA National that he has no fear taking on some of the high-arching risky iron shots that Augusta requires.

Si Woo Kim (+20000)

The former Players Champion has had a bit of a resurgence since the restart after really struggling through most of 2019 and early 2020. Kim has done it with a great driver and impeccable short game around the greens. When he pairs that with just average putting, he often contends. The bonus at Augusta is Bent greens are the only type he putts close to average with. He’s contended at the PGA, Wyndham and Shriners in recent tournaments and has a couple Top 25s at Augusta in his last two starts. His key stats are solid too, ranking 5th in SG: ARG and 5th in Par 4: 450-500 Yards.

J.T. Poston (+50000)

It’s never a bad idea to throw in someone you think can go nuclear with the putter at Augusta. I generally don’t love putting stats to be overly predictive for most players, but Poston has shown especially as of late to expect a good week with the putter the majority of the time. He has three Top 10s since the restart including 3rd at Sanderson a few starts ago. The major encouraging sign is his approach play has been quite good in three of his last four starts. Most of his best finishes on Tour have been in the Southeast, so it wouldn’t be surprising if the Carolina boy found himself at home at Augusta and contended despite an insanely high price.
