MLB Betting Preview: Houston Astros vs. Seattle Mariners – Monday, Sept. 21, 2020

The Houston Astros will try to cement their place in the American League playoffs beginning Monday with a series at T-Mobile Park in Seattle against the Mariners. The Astros are currently the eighth seeded American League team tied with the Toronto Blue Jays.

Seattle, however, could also make a last-minute push, but they would have to sweep the Astros and probably the Oakland A’s as well. MyBookie has a moneyline on this game of Houston -135, while Seattle checks in at +115.

Houston Astros Betting Preview: Get into the Playoffs

The Houston Astros come into play with a record of 27-26, six games behind the Oakland Athletics in the American League West. They have won two games in a row and currently are tied with the Toronto Blue Jays for the last two playoff spots.

If the Astros are going to make the playoffs, they are going to have to win some games on the road down the stretch. The Astros have put themselves in a position to have to win to get in because they are just 7-18 on the road this season.

Where are their last seven games? You guessed it, away from Minute Maid Park. The Astros will send righty Lance McCullers to win a huge road game Monday. McCullers is 3-2 with a 4.87 ERA on the season. In his last outing, he threw seven shutout innings against the Texas Rangers in a 1-0 Houston loss last Wednesday.

Houston’s offense hasn’t been what it has been in the past. The leading hitter is shortstop Carlos Correa, but he is hitting just .261. Center fielder George Springer leads the team with 13 home runs, and right fielder Kyle Tucker has driven in 41 runs.

Seattle Mariners Betting Preview: Win Out

The Seattle Mariners come into play with a record of 23-30, four games behind the Astros for the last playoff spot. They are going to have to win every game this week to have a chance, it appears. The Mariners will have three against Houston and four against Oakland to finish out the regular season.

Seattle is also a team that could have easily made the playoffs by now if they had a better road record. The Mariners are just 11-21 on the road this season and play the last four in Oakland. Seattle will send their best pitcher, lefty Marco Gonzales to the mound Monday to start the M’s playoff push.

Gonzales is 6-2 with a 3.49 ERA on the season. In his last outing, Gonzales was not sharp, going six innings and allowing five runs on six hits in a 6-5 loss to Oakland.

The Mariners’ offense is led by right fielder Kyle Lewis. Lewis is hitting .280 with 11 home runs and 28 RBI. Third baseman Kyle Seager is hitting .232 with seven home runs, but leads the team with 33 RBI.

Betting Lines and Predictions

MyBookie has a moneyline on this game of Houston -135, while Seattle currently sits at +115. The over/under is currently set at 8. Neither one of these teams knocks the cover off the ball, and the starting pitchers have both been fairly sharp for most of the year.

Gonzales pitches well at home, going 3-0 on the year. Take the Mariners in this one.
