The New England Patriots‘ offense may have looked to BetOnline customers as if it had added a dynamic new dimension at season’s outset, as Cam Newton was showing opponents the kind of mobility that was never a hallmark of Tom Brady.
But things have kind of deteriorated since then. As we entered the weekend, the Pats were a 2-5 team (3-4 against the spread) and were looking up to both the Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins in the AFC East.
They had a chance to gain ground last week, but Newton fumbled on a running play deep in Buffalo territory to help the Bills preserve a 24-21 victory.
So here they are, with a chance to work out some frustrations in the Monday night game against the New York Jets, who can’t seem to get out of their own way, possessors of a winless record (0-8 SU, 1-7 ATS) and with, in all probability, a lame duck coach (and maybe QB too).
It’s set for an 8:15 PM ET kickoff at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ.
Here are the Monday Night Football betting odds at BetOnline:
New England Patriots -10 (-103)
New York Jets +10 (-117)
Under 41.5 points -110
Over 41.5 points -110

Jets – Rookie is like a rock
Are there some things that are solid about the Jets? Sure there are. For one thing, left tackle Mekhi Becton, who the team drafted with the 11th overall pick, has been an absolute revelation. He already has a reputation around the league as someone hard to beat, and he’s most certainly scored big in comparison to his Giants counterpart, Andrew Thomas, who was taken ahead of him and has endured much criticism.
Jets – Flacco likely to start
Becton has done a good job protecting whatever quarterback he is playing in front of, and this week we’re not completely sure who that’s going to be. Sam Darnold, stiff suffering from a lingering shoulder problem, has been held out of practice for the most part, as coach Adam Gase wants to be careful. So as of Sunday he has been listed as doubtful. That would make Joe Flacco the likely starter, and if that happens, the assignment becomes more difficult for a guy like Becton, because of Flacco’s relative immobility.
But you’ve got to wonder if not having Darnold could be a blessing in disguise for the Jets. As you may remember, Darnold “saw ghosts” against the Pats when these teams played a little more than a year ago. In his two games against New England, Darnold has completed 45% of his passes with four interceptions.
Jets-Pats: The matchup
We could talk to you about how the Pats are going to come out angry after these four straight losses, or what kind of point spread record Bill Belichick has had after a loss. But we wouldn’t insult you with any of that. Without Tom Brady, it is a new day, and you do have to wonder whether they are second-guessing themselves about dealing Jimmy Garoppolo (although perhaps it was unavoidable).
The Jets have punted on 50.6% of their possessions, and there is no other NFL team as inept as all that. They rank last in any number of other offensive categories; to borrow a term, “too numerous to mention.” So we’re not sure how far they’re going to get against Belichick’s defense, which still plays with some pride.
Jets-Pats: Which way do we go?
Meanwhile, the Jets are still holding up reasonably well on the defensive side, in particular with what they’ve done against the run, where they are third best in the league in Adjusted Line Yards, according to our analytics friends at Football Outsiders.
We figure New England will want to run the ball, since it is the more reliable option for them. But we’ll see. The closest the Jets have come to any opponent this year in eight points, if that’s something you want to use as a barometer. But we think the best option here might be to go UNDER the total.
