With the end of February fast approaching and the All-Star Break on the horizon, teams in the NBA are looking at their current status and thinking about what moves they might need to make prior to the trade deadline. We are seeing some minor moves happen now, but rumors are swirling, and bigger trades will be coming. For now, most potential moves are nothing more than rumors, as fortunes and needs can change dramatically in a matter of a couple of weeks. There are some things to talk about this week, though, so let’s get right into the latest NBA news and rumors so you can continue betting against their NBA odds.
2021 NBA Betting News & Rumors February 23rd Edition
One team that is rumored to be in the market for a big-name player is the Dallas Mavericks, who have had a disappointing first half. Word out of Dallas is that no player other than Luka Doncic is safe right now, with Mark Cuban supposedly looking for a legitimate start to help out his own star player. One name that seems to be floating around right how is Kristaps Porzingis, and while Cuban has denied making any inquiries about acquiring the big man, there are a couple of reports that suggest he may indeed have made a call or two.
A move that has already been made saw the Houston Rockets waive 30-year old Marcus Cousins, leaving him on the open market as a free agent. Cousins has suffered through a couple of serious injuries and has had a tough time recovering his old form. That said, he could still prove to be a valuable pickup for several different teams, although any team that takes him would need to absorb a $1.62 million cap hit. It does not seem as though Cousins will land back with the Lakers as some thought he might, but it does appear that he would like a chance to play with the Miami Heat, although no word yet of they are interested.
While Mark Cuban and the Mavericks may be denying interest in making a major move at this point, the Philadelphia 76ers are very much in the market for some new faces. President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey has developed a reputation for making aggressive moves and reports suggest that he is looking at making several trades to help keep the 76ers at the top of the Eastern Conference. There have been no major targets pinpointed as yet, although Kyle Lowry of the Toronto Raptors is a player that appears to be in Philly’s sights.
The final piece of news this week is about an NBA player that we haven’t seen on the court since back in 2019. While we did not expect to see Pau Gasol back in the NBA, rumors have been swirling that the 40-year-old would be heading back to Barcelona to rejoin the team where his career began. Gasol has consistently denied the rumor, with his most recent denial coming this past weekend, but it is now official that he will be back in Spain soon.
