Just two days after Bryson DeChambeau was crowned with his first career major championship title at the US Open, four of the world’s best players converge on Tiger Woods’ very first publicly designed golf course in an exhibition charity match honoring the late Payne Stewart.
Tiger will team up with his President’s Cup partner Justin Thomas and square off against the European duo of Rory McIlroy and Justin Rose.
There will be three formats used, with the first six holes being best ball, followed by six holes of alternate shot. After that, holes 13-18 will be singles, with a closest to the pin competition on the 202-yard bonus “Johnny Morris 19th hole” also taking place and being used as a tiebreaker if needed.
Payne’s Cup Charity Golf Match Odds
|Tiger Woods/Justin Thomas||-125|
|Rory McIlroy/Justin Rose||+100|
Odds taken September 21st at DraftKings
Both Teams Have Very Similar Recent Form
All four of these golfers have a massive pedigree, having reached number one player in the world, won a major, FedEx Cup, and Ryder Cup.
Speaking of the Ryder Cup, this would have been the week it was played at Whistling Straits Golf Course, but the COVID-19 pandemic has shifted the event to 2021, so this charity match acts as a de facto competition.
The anticipation of playing a new course can be thrilling and nerve-racking. @JustinRose99 recommends walking the course and building a plan based on your tendencies. #golf #howto #team ? https://t.co/pX8TlQHSol pic.twitter.com/VL08tMqCUR

Woods and Rose both missed the cut at Winged Foot, while McIlroy and Thomas finished t-eighth – but found themselves a full twelve shots behind champion Bryson DeChambeau.
Both Rory and JT have posted back-to-back top-10 finishes, while Rose has one top ten finish in eight events since the restart and Tiger hasn’t had any in his last six times teeing it up.
Tiger Should Have Home Course Advantage
If Woods can’t get around this track and figure out how to fashion a score then there’s a problem considering he designed the track.
He and JT partnered to win both of their matches together at the President’s Cup last year, so they have familiarity with each other’s games and have come out on top before.

Thomas was the highest ranked player competing in both par-4 and par-5 scoring average in 2020. With Payne’s Valley boasting ten par-4’s and the typical four par-3’s and four par-5’s, team USA will have a slight advantage from that standpoint.
Fun fact from #USOpen. Who made the most birdies at #WingedFoot? Not champion #BrysonDeChambeau. It was 1st round leader #JustinThomas, who made 16 birdies but finished T8 at 6-over, 12 strokes behind DeChambeau.

You know Tiger will be playing for considerable pride coming off a missed cut at the US Open and he’ll want to showcase his first public golf course, and knows the track inside and out. He’s playing with the golfer who has the most wins this season so they have the advantage.
Pick: Tiger Woods/Justin Thomas (-125)
