The Grade II, $200,000 Eddie D Stakes will run as Race 7 on the Sept. 25 card at Santa Anita.
The event for 3-year-olds and up will cover 5 1/2 furlongs on turf and include names like Wildman Jack and Sparky Ville among the field of seven.
Here is a look at the top runners set for the Eddie D Stakes.
Wildman Jack, Sparky Ville
One of the leading runners coming into the race is W.C. Racing Inc.’s Wildman Jack. The 4-year-old gelding from Goldencents is trained by Doug F. O’Neill.
He has a career record of 4-2-1 from 10 starts and earnings of $389,005. In 2020, he has two wins from five outings.
Last time out, he finished fourth in the Aug. 1 Bing Crosby Stakes (G1) at Del Mar, where he registered a 113 Speed Figure. Before that, he took a disappointing 13th in the July 11 Shakertown Stakes (G2) at Keeneland.
The runner’s two victories came in the May 23 Daytona Stakes (G3) at Santa Anita, where he registered a 115 Speed Figure, and the March 7 Nad Al Sheba Turf Sprint Sponsored By Arabian Adventures (G3) at Meydan Racecourse.
Wildman Jack will break from post 1 under jockey Abel Cedillo.
Another one of the top names among the field is Del Secco DCS Racing’s Sparky Ville. The 4-year-old gelding from Candy Ride is trained by Jeff Bonde.
He is 4-2-2 from 15 career starts and has earnings of $321,812. His 2020 performances include one win and one second from five runs.
His most-recent performance was a sixth-place finish in the Aug. 22 Green Flash Handicap (G3) at Del Mar, where he registered a 105 Speed Figure. He also took a July 26 allowance optional claiming race at the track and second in the May 23 Daytona Stakes (G3) at Santa Anita, the latter resulting in a 115 Speed Figure.
Sparky Ville will break from post 1 under Mike E. Smith.
El Tigre Terrible
One more entrant to pay attention to is Slam Dunk Racing and Michael Nentwig’s El Tigre Terrible. The 3-year-old gelding from Smiling Tiger is trained by Peter Miller.
He has a career record of 4-1-1 from eight starts and earnings of $210,510. This year, he has one win and one runner-up finish from three starts.
He scored the July 31 Real Good Deal Stakes (Black Type) at Del Mar, which followed an 11th-place finish in the July 10 Runhappy Oceanside Stakes (Black Type) at Del Mar. His other 2020 performance was a second-place effort in the June 6 Desert Code Stakes (Black Type) at Santa Anita.
El Tigre Terrible will break from post 6 under Flavien Prat.
The rest of the field (post, jockey) is set to include: Give Me the Lute (post 2, D. Van Dyke), Mr. Vargas (post 3, T. Baze), Grit and Curiosity (post 4, L. Saez), and Big Runnuer (post 7, J. J. Hernandez).
