The $100,000 Palm Beach Stakes will run as Race 6 on Gulfstream Park’s loaded February 27 card.
The event for 3-year-olds covers 1 1/16 miles on turf and is set to include prominent names like Scarlett Sky, Annex, and Fighting Force among the field of eight.
Here is a look at the top runners set for the upcoming Palm Beach Stakes:
Betting Preview: Scarlett Sky, Annex
The morning-line favorite coming in at 5/2 is Stuart S. Janney, III’s Scarlett Sky. The Sky Mesa colt is trained by Claude McGaughey.
He has a solid career record of 2-2-0 from five starts and earnings of $101,000. The colt already has one win in 2021.
That victory came in a January 14 allowance optional claiming race at Gulfstream Park. To close out his 2020 season, the runner finished fourth in the November 28 Central Park Stakes (Black Type) at Aqueduct Racetrack. Some of his other notable 2020 runs include an October 23 maiden special weight victory and a September 18 second-place finish in a maiden special weight race at Belmont Park.
Scarlett Sky will break from post 3 under jockey Jose Ortiz.
The second-choice coming into the mix at 3/1 is LNJ Foxwoods and Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners’ Annex. The Constitution colt is trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott.
He only has one career start, which came this year, and earnings of $24,000.
That one start was a January 16 maiden special weight victory at Gulfstream Park, where he registered a 91 Speed Figure.
Annex will break from post 2 under rider Junior Alvarado.
Betting Preview: Fighting Force
Michael Tabor, Mrs. John Magnier, and Derrick Smith’s Fighting Force are coming in at 9/2. The Air Force Blue colt is trained by another Hall of Famer in Todd Pletcher.
He is 1-2-1 from five career starts with earnings of $69,850, meaning he has more experience than the other top runners. In 2021, he has one runner-up effort from two starts.
His most recent performance was a fourth-place finish in the January 31 Texas Turf Mile Stakes (Black Type) at Sam Houston. The second-place run came in the January 2 Dania Beach Stakes at Gulfstream Park, where he finished behind Kentucky Pharoah. To close out his 2020 campaign, the colt scored a December 5 maiden special weight race at Gulfstream.
Fighting Force will break from post 6 under jockey John Velazquez.
The rest of the field (post, morning line) is set to include: Hot Blooded (post 1, 20/1); Cave Hill (post 4, 6/1); Arzak (post 5, 5/1); Sigiloso (post 7, 20/1); and Chess’s Dream (post 8, 6/1).
Free Betting Pick
Fighting Force is a good pick for this race, offering better odds than the other two. He has more race experience than Scarlett Sky and Annex, and he has already raced twice this year. Those two races were against stakes company, and he managed to finish fourth and second. He will have to increase his speed to overtake the favorite.
