The San Juan Capistrano Stakes from Santa Anita Park Betting Preview – Sunday, June 21, 2020

The Grade III San Juan Capistrano Stakes is just one of a number of top-class contests taking place on Santa Anita’s closing weekend. Taking place on the downhill turf, this event requires plenty of stamina with the three-year olds competing over a distance of a mile and ¾. Twelve months ago, Phillip D’Amato’s Acclimate bagged the $100,000 purse, edging ahead of Richard Baltas’ Oscar Dominguez.

Siberian Iris

Irish-bred Siberian Iris is likely to be popular with bettors and is [Insert Odds] with [Insert Bookmaker]. Richard Mandella’s charge has been keeping good company, although he came up short in the Grade I Gamely at the end of May. Mandella is a savvy horseman who knows exactly where to place his runners, and despite only finishing third in the Grade III Astra at this track back in January, this race doesn’t look too much tougher.

Swamp Souffle

Steve Knapp’s charge came fourth in the San Luis Rey back in March, although his two subsequent runs have been largely disappointing. He returns to the grass today, hoping for a much better performance. However, his top Beyer of 86 on the turf may just see him fall short.

Avalanche

At [Insert Odds] with [Insert Bookmaker], Michael McCarthy’s representative is likely to be very popular this weekend. He nearly had the measure of Red King in a tough optional claimer at the end of May, and he looks likely to put in a similar performance this weekend. Although his 2019 campaign was short and sweet, his convincing victory here at Santa Anita showed real promise and he is likely to go close again here.

Ward N Jerry

Ward N Jerry has a great record on the grass here at Santa Anita, and at [Insert Odds] with [Insert Bookmaker], he is expected to make an impact yet again in Arcadia. Having been victorious in the San Luis Rey Stakes back in March, he failed to hit the same heights in the Crystal Water, but should be raring to go here for trainer Mike Puype. His Beyer’s suggest that he’s the one to beat here.

Free Betting Pick

Having gone close in a Grade II contest at Del Mar last year, Ward N Jerry looks primed for another big run in California this weekend. He can be forgiven for a lacklustre effort in the Crystal Water as the trip may have been insufficient. Back up in distance, Mike Puype’s runner should be able to dominate from start to finish.
