‘Zephyr’ Amtrak from Sac to Reno a lot more scenic and fun than expected

I recently took a train trip to Reno, Nevada, on the Amtrak for a vacation to celebrate my birthday. I picked Reno as my destination I had never been before and somewhere not incredibly far from Chico because I wanted to go somewhere with less COVID-19 restrictions, somewhere. It had been my time that is first going Reno and my first time riding an Amtrak train.

First, my traveling companion and I took an Amtrak connecting bus from the Amtrak station in Chico to the Amtrak station in Sacramento.

The train was delayed by four hours they were playing music from the ’70s so we passed the time in a sandwich shop in the train station where. It had been a wait that is long it was worth it.

We had the train car all to ourselves on the way there, and only a handful of people joined us on the trip back to Sacramento. The space allowed us to marvel at the sights freely together. We had plenty of legroom in between the rows of seats — at least double the legroom of a plane. Each ticket cost about $90.

The train we took was the California Zephyr. It made stops in Roseville, Colfax and Truckee, before arriving in Reno. The higher up we went in elevation, the more gorgeous and stunning the views became. We saw bright, sunlit woodsy meadows, farmland, hills, huge pine woods, a lake as well as the Truckee River, which flowed appropriate beside us. We experienced a few tunnels that are dark. The views also changed from bright green grass to snowy mountains, and the skies went from sunshine to cloud cover that is thick. In the beginning, there clearly was no snowfall anywhere. Slowly, we began seeing spots of snowfall greater up and then perhaps a foot of snowfall on either relative side of the train.

Once the train arrived in Reno around 8 p.m., we took an Uber from the train station to the hotel we would be staying at, the Atlantis Casino Resort.

Our plans in Reno were to gamble at night and spend the sightseeing that is daytime enjoying different amenities the resort provides, like an internal pool and lots of pubs and restaurants. We didn’t reach get within the pool though that we needed reservations to use it because we found out too late. We ended up not doing sightseeing that is much the resort had a great deal to provide. We had been here for three evenings.

The Atlantis Casino Resort boasts numerous casino that is huge packed with machines and table games like blackjack, roulette and craps. We both played a little bit of everything, but I had the success that is most at blackjack and roulette, my two favorite games.

There were probably a huge selection of individuals within the casino at mostly at the slot machines, but far fewer during the day night. Many of the tables that are high-minimum closed through the day due to the slow period.

we met a couple that has relocated to Reno from Ca. Someone had been from Stockton as well as the other had been really from Chico. The cost was said by her of living in Reno is very similar to Chico, but there are far fewer college students in Reno, despite the presence of the University of Nevada, Reno and Truckee Meadows Community College. The man from Stockton said he appreciated the lower taxes in Nevada.

The beds were super comfortable, thanks to the pillowtop mattress that is lush. We’d a fantastic view regarding the hills through the day as well as the town lights through the night from our space regarding the floor that is tenth. The Sky Terrace sushi restaurant offers floor-to-ceiling windows that provide views of the street that is busy as well as the hills beingshown to people there. The foodstuff had been additionally exceptional as well as the sushi rolls we ordered through the all-you-can-eat menu had been the i’ve that is largest seen.

The hotel strictly enforced COVID-19 safety measures, even requiring us to back put our masks on in between sips of our products during the club. The blackjack dealers wore gloves while working as well as the potato chips had been sprayed with disinfectant after each and every game. There have been barriers that are also plexiglass between each player and the dealer. All the restaurants were indoors that are open restricted capability with social distancing between tables. The resort it self had been restricted to 6,800 visitors.

On the train back into Sacramento, sitting over the aisle one line in-front of me personally, there clearly was a man that is middle-aged a Mohawk — but not a spiked one. He carved wood as a hobby and I watched as he etched intricate designs into a large cross that is wooden great focus on information. He was heard by me tell someone that it was a replica of something from the 1600s.

I marveled again at all the sights outside my window. The land that is open Reno had been as stunning as other things we saw regarding the journey. There have been green hillsides and red stone cliffs illuminated in the morning sun that is bright. I hadn’t gotten to see it on the way into Reno we arrived because it was already dark when.

Our train from Reno to Sacramento had been an hour later so we missed the coach to Chico, therefore we took an Uber back into Chico. Our motorist had been an man that is african, to my surprise, spoke Spanish very fluently because he had gone to college in Cuba. He said Cuba was a country that is beautiful right back by its politics.

The journey had been affordable. The space had been about $70 per for weekdays night. Each train ticket (connecting buses included) was around $90. Our gambling budget was $100 per person per and the budget for food was $100 a day per person also night. Uber fare had been about $10-12 per journey in Reno and often around $100-$200 from Sacramento to Chico. Neither of us drive, therefore transportation expenses will be various with your personal vehicle or leasing a motor vehicle I will never forget and I am very excited to take the Amtrak again and visit Reno again in the future.[email protected]Kelsey if you take the train.
